SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

Kaname and Aya’s mom makes a surprise return home. After a sarcastic response from Kaname, Arisugawa-san gives her youngest daughter special tickets to a luxury onsen resort. Kaname gives them to Nasa, who eventually accepts. Both Nasa and Tsukasa are nervous about going to an onsen together. The day of the trip, Kaname sees them off. Tsukasa worries Chitose might crash their holiday, but Chitose has no such plans.

At the ryokan, the luxury room overwhelms Nasa and Tsukasa. The okami lady assures them this is their room. Further, she has an even more luxurious room at the ryokan. The couple decide to not use their private onsen, but rather use the large, segregated, public onsen. Nasa decides he needs to come up with an impressive list of activities to do with Tsukasa, and so leaves the bath early and gets dressed.

Back at the Arisugawa bathhouse, Kaname cons Aya to help clean the place, assisted by Chitose. Meanwhile, before Nasa can leave the ryokan on a scouting mission, an elderly lady needs his help getting to reception, then to her room. She speaks of her own short marriage to her deceased husband. Tsukasa finds them and recognizes the woman as Tokiko, the wealthy grandmother of Chitose.

Back at Tokiklo’s enormous suite, Nasa makes his formal introduction to Tokiko. She has some fun teasing Tsukasa. At the same time, she has words of praise for Nasa, especially with the moon rock. To that end, she gives Nasa a tour card that will allow Nasa and Tsukasa to hit the big onsens in Kusatsu. Afterward, the couple return to their room to check the private onsen.

And so we have TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You Season 2 05 and the first part of the onsen trip.

Modifications to the Source Material

The source manga material for TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You Season 2 05 came from chapters 69, 70, 71, and 76 inserted just for fun. Since chapter 76 was a short, side story to provide fanservice for Kaname and Aya, and it was tacked onto the end of the onsen story, it didn’t bother me that it got moved forward to a “real time” position within the context of the story.

Beyond that, this episode’s adaptation is pretty much spot on with the manga.

Tokiko

One of the things that irritated me about the first season of Tonikaku Kawaii anime was the reduction of the references to Tokiko. In terms of the plot of this series, Tokiko is very important. So losing some of these minor moments meant a reduction in foreshadowing her introduction in TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You Season 2 05.

Still, it was fun seeing Tokiko on the screen. I enjoyed seeing her troll Tsukasa for reactions. At the same time, knowing the manga story as I do, it is kinda nice hearing Tokiko speak of things that were still a mystery to me back then. Tokiko is such a powerful presence in the manga. I won’t spoil that for anime only watchers. However, it does make me want to reread the manga. Shame the official Viz adaptation is such rubbish.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

In the end, TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You Season 2 05 was a fun story that officially introduces Tokiko, and drops plot hints galore. And we got to see Arisugawa-san again.
